Seems very harsh to me in today’s world but even just 80 years ago such punishment was regular and especially during wartime. I still think Michael Imperioli was a bad choice for playing Christopher considering what a great choice they made for the rest of the cast. He never came across as this hardened young street gangster he had to act as, his physical constitution alone made his role unrealistic but it was his whole manners. Not to say he couldn't play a mafiosi but it would have to be a plotting, reserved role maybe.

How cool would it have been if they offered the owner of Johnny’s sacks home a part on the show, he would make a good mafia character.
